Hello/Intro GrovetonReturn to index of stories... |
Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. The recent announcement that Groveton Paper Board would shut down came as a shock to its 108 workers. But, it's an all too familiar development for the North Country. The region has long relied on its natural resources - in particular forest products - and the closure has renewed calls for diversification of the economy. More on that in a moment. First, Outlook's Richard Ager visited Groveton to see what's being done for the workers, and what initiatives might make for a more stable economic base for the area. |

Here to talk about the North Country Economy and what's Next for the region: Senator John Gallus, from District 1, Jim Tibbets, the CEO of First Colebrook Bank, Kathy Eneguess, The President of NH Community Technical College and Peter Riviere, the Director of the Coos County Economic Development agency. Welcome to all of you. We Begin with GOOD news -- just in-- regarding Federal money for the re-training of workers who lost their jobs in the Groveton Paperboard mill closing. Governor Lynch tells NH Outlook that he anticipates those workers will receive anywhere from 35-hundred to 20-thousand dollars per worker -- under the Trade Act. Q SEN GALLUS: That sounds like a lot to me. Can you shed any more light on these MONIES for re-training.? ** what does that ENTAIL? Q PETER RIVIERE: What's happening on the LOCAL front. Have their been meetings with workers to keep them in the loop. Q KATHY ENGEGUESS / JIM TIBBETS: Give us the Big Picture. How is this latest Mill Closing affecting the North Country's economy? Q SEN GALLUS: What is the HEALTH of Groveton's economy at this juncture? Q KATHY/ SEN GALLUS: Berlin certainly knows what Groveton is going thru. Back in 2001 -- when the PAPER MILL INDUSTRY -- went bust -- HUNDREDS lost their jobs. Mill eventually re-opened. Has THAT community fully recovered from that DOWNCYLE? *ANY useful Lessons LEARNED from that experience that could be applied to Groveton? Q JIM: Can Mill towns like Berlin and Groveton. COMPETE successfully in a global marketplace -- when it comes to the Paper & Pulp Industry? Q PETER/ The North Country has always had a TIMBER-based economy.. Everyone agrees the Economy needs to be DIVERSIFIED. What's standing in the way? Q SEN GALLUS/KATHY: After the Berlin Mill Closings -- the mantra was.we need to DIVERSIFY. Q PETER/JIM/KATHY: What actions if any are being taken to DIVERSIFY the economy??? What's being done REGIONALLY to help? Q PETER/ SEN GALLUS: Where do things stand NOW.in the employment picture ??? Last statistic I read said the North Country's UNEMPLOYMENT rate was 3RD HIGHEST in NH? Q ANYONE: Despite Job losses -- Residents don't want to RELOCATE Seems PEOPLE go to great lengths to stay in the area q IF you look at Emerson Sporting Goods - and what they've been able to do as far as GROWING the business. ANY lessonS that can be derived from that experience? Q KATHY/JIM/ PETER: In an area ECONOMICALLY-challenged. Are their OTHER ways to EXPLOIT the unique charateristics of the North Country to bring in more BUSINESS??? Q PETER: Last time we spoke about the North country's economey. BROADBAND came up. The Governor talked about wanting to get high-speed internet acess thru out the state. WHERE do those efforts stand? Why so Important??? ** Q SEN GALLUS: You're a life long resident of Berlin. What would you say is the HEALTH of the North Country's economy? Optimistic the region will weather this latest economic hit??? Q PETER, KATHY, JIM: What is the North Country hoping Gov Lynch will be able to do for the region? Q What can STATE do?? Is there anything state can do on a macro level -- or is the region the recipient of a larger force? Q PETER/KATHY/JIM: How do you find another strand of economic activity that would allow the REGION to grow? Q HOPEFUL things will improve -- what needs to happen to turn things around? ============== Certainly Unique challenges to the region's economic prosperity. Any parting words on the FUTURE of the North Country's economy?? SEN GALLUS/ PETER RIVIERE, KATHY ENGEGUESS, AND JIM TIBBETS A reminder to Groveton Paperboard Workers.
